Pain point 1: Inconvenient installationA salesperson is unlikely to tell you this in advance: a fresh-air air conditioner needs one more duct than an ordinary air conditioner.
During installation, the existing air-conditioner opening must either be enlarged or a second opening must be drilled beside it for a two-hole installation. Either way, the result can be both expensive and unattractive.
Pain point 2: Expensive consumables
The fresh-air function filters outdoor air before blowing it indoors. The benefit is cleaner air, but the downside is a consumable component: every fresh-air air conditioner contains a filter for cleaning the incoming air.
The filter must be replaced regularly to maintain filtration performance. A single replacement generally costs about RMB 300.
More importantly, each model uses a different filter. There is no universal replacement option, so users must purchase the filter through the manufacturer's after-sales channel, where prices are relatively high.
Pain point 3: Disappointing performance
Some users report that turning on the fresh-air function feels no different from leaving it off.
Others say that after someone smokes a cigarette in the room, the fresh-air function must run for more than half an hour before the odor disappears.
Some users even say they cannot tell whether the fresh-air function is working at all.
Pain point 4: No heat exchange
Users who bought fresh-air air conditioners several years ago often complained that they lacked a heat-exchange function.
What is heat exchange? In summer, the outdoor air is hot while the indoor air is cool; in winter, the reverse is true. When fresh air is enabled, outdoor air is blown indoors. A heat-exchange function heats or cools the outdoor air before bringing it in, preventing the fresh air from disturbing the indoor temperature.
Pain point 5: Cannot operate independently
People often need air conditioning for only two seasons each year, but fresh air can be useful in every season. Can the fresh-air function operate during spring and autumn when cooling or heating is not needed?
Many older air conditioners could not do this, but newer models now can.
