HEPA filters remove particles through four mechanisms: interception, gravitational settling, airflow, and van der Waals forces.1. Interception works much like a sieve. Large particles measuring about 5 or 10 µm are intercepted and trapped.
2. Small, dense dust particles slow down as they pass through the HEPA filter and settle naturally on the filter under the influence of gravity, much like sediment settling on a riverbed.
3. The irregular arrangement of the filter fibers creates numerous air vortices. Small particles are carried by these currents and become attached to the HEPA filter.
4. Ultrafine particles move by Brownian motion, collide with the HEPA fiber layer, and are captured under the influence of van der Waals forces. Virus-carrying particles smaller than 0.3 µm can be captured through this mechanism.
