To bring indoor air quality up to a defined cleanliness standard, an air purifier must meet two essential requirements:It must provide enough air changes per hour; an international reference value is five air changes per hour.
Its single-pass purification efficiency must be sufficiently high.
The recommended coverage area of an air purifier can be calculated as follows:
Coverage area S (m²) = 12F / (60H)
In this formula, five air changes per hour mean one complete air change every 12 minutes. F is the CADR in m³/h, and H is the effective ceiling height. A typical room may have a physical height of 2.8 m, but after accounting for furniture and other fixtures, an effective height of 2.3 m can be used.
For example, for an air purifier with a maximum airflow of 760 m³/h:
S = 12 × 760 / (60 × 2.3) ≈ 66 m²
In a 66 m² room with an effective height of about 2.3 m, the hourly circulation rate is:
760 / (66 × 2.3) ≈ 5 air changes per hour
After allowing for the room's effective volume, the result is still about five air changes per hour. If the area you need to clean is larger than the purifier's rated coverage, you may need more than one unit to achieve the desired indoor-air cleanliness level.
