Basic PerformanceA separator-type HEPA filter, also known as a HEPA filter with separators, is a core final-stage component used for high-precision filtration in air-filtration systems. Its design and main performance characteristics are as follows.
Structural Features
Filter media: The main medium is ultrafine glass-fiber filter paper, although polypropylene or polyester paper is used in a limited number of applications. It provides very high filtration accuracy, typically at least 99.97% for 0.3 μm particles, meeting HEPA requirements.
Separator design: Aluminum foil, paper, or plastic separators support and evenly divide the filter paper, creating airflow channels that are normally 2–4 mm apart. These channels allow air to pass smoothly while preventing the media from deforming under pressure.
Frame: Common frame materials include aluminum alloy, galvanized steel, and wood. The frame ensures structural stability and can be customized for the equipment. Typical sizes include 610 × 610 × 150 mm and 305 × 610 × 150 mm.
Filtration Performance
Efficiency grades: Products commonly meet H13 or H14 under EN 1822. H13 provides at least 99.95% efficiency for the most penetrating particles, while H14 provides at least 99.995%. Some specialized filters can reach U15–U17 ultra-high-efficiency grades.
Airflow and resistance: Initial resistance at rated airflow is normally 200–300 Pa. It rises as dust accumulates, and final resistance is generally set at 400–600 Pa. Typical airflow ranges from 100 to 1,000 m³/h, depending on filter size and media area.
Dust-holding capacity: Media thickness and separator spacing give these filters a moderate dust-holding capacity—generally better than a separatorless filter but lower than a bag filter. Typical service life is 6–12 months, depending on the dust concentration in the operating environment.
Suitable Operating Conditions
Temperature resistance: Glass-fiber paper can withstand approximately 70–120°C for short periods, making it suitable for ambient- to medium-temperature applications. Temperatures above 120°C require a specially designed high-temperature filter.
Moisture resistance: Standard filter paper is not waterproof. Humid environments require water-resistant media, such as paper with a hydrophobic coating, to prevent moisture damage and loss of filtration performance.
Typical Applications
Because separator-type HEPA filters combine high-precision filtration with a stable structure, they are primarily used in environments with extremely strict air-cleanliness requirements.
Cleanrooms and Laboratories
Applications: Semiconductor production areas that require Class 1 to Class 10 cleanliness, P3 and P4 biosafety laboratories, and pharmaceutical GMP areas for sterile preparations.
Function: As the final filter, it removes airborne microorganisms and dust particles, preventing product contamination and experimental error. In photolithography, for example, particles as small as 0.1 μm can reduce chip yield.
Healthcare Facilities
Applications: Operating rooms, especially Class 100 laminar-flow operating rooms, intensive-care units, sterile wards, and pharmaceutical filling lines.
Function: High-efficiency filtration controls airborne bacteria and viruses. Viruses may travel on droplet nuclei in the 0.5–5 μm range, so effective particle removal helps lower postoperative infection risk and maintain drug sterility.
Electronics and Precision Manufacturing
Applications: Hard-drive assembly plants, optical-lens production areas, and microelectronics packaging workshops.
Function: The filter removes ultrafine airborne particles, including particles below 0.1 μm, preventing contamination-related failures in precision parts such as coated lenses and hard-drive heads.
Food and Cosmetics Production
Applications: Aseptic filling workshops for products such as yogurt and juice, and emulsification areas for premium cosmetics where microbial contamination must be tightly controlled.
Function: Food-grade versions use suitable frames and sealants to meet hygiene requirements. They remove mold spores, yeast, and dust from the air, helping protect product safety and shelf life.
Final Filtration in HVAC Systems
Applications: Central-air-conditioning terminals in premium commercial buildings such as offices and hotels, as well as clean-air-handling units.
Function: After pre-filters remove large particles and medium-efficiency filters remove particles of approximately 1–5 μm, the HEPA filter provides final purification. This improves indoor air quality and reduces allergens such as pollen and dust-mite debris.
Comparison with Separatorless HEPA Filters
Item | Separator-type HEPA filter | Separatorless HEPA filter
Structure | Uses aluminum-foil or paper separators; generally 150–300 mm thick | Uses self-supported pleated media without separators; generally 40–80 mm thick
Airflow and resistance | Handles higher airflow but normally has slightly higher resistance | Handles lower airflow and normally has lower resistance
Cost | Generally lower because separator materials and assembly are economical | Generally higher because the precision pleating process is more complex
Typical applications | Large spaces and high-airflow equipment, such as cleanroom air-handling systems | Compact equipment, such as household air purifiers and medical devices
In summary, separator-type HEPA filters are essential in high-precision filtration systems. Their advantages are especially important in industrial and medical applications that require high airflow, strong structural stability, and consistently strict cleanliness control.
