“ Chemical filters remove VOCs, acids, alkalis, ozone, and formaldehyde by adsorption, absorption, or catalysis. Review performance data and application ranges. ”
Chemical filters are functional air-filtration devices designed to remove gaseous pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), acidic gases, alkaline gases, ozone, and formaldehyde. They act through chemical mechanisms including adsorption, absorption, and catalytic decomposition, complementing physical filters such as HEPA media. Their basic performance data and practical application ranges are detailed below.
Basic Performance Data

The core performance of a chemical filter depends on the type and quantity of adsorbent and on how specifically it targets the pollutant. Key parameters are as follows.

Performance parameter | Typical range
Pollutant removal efficiency | Formaldehyde: initial efficiency ≥90% within 24 hours; long-term efficiency ≥60% after 1,000 hours, depending on activated carbon adsorption capacity. VOCs such as benzene, toluene, and xylene: single-pass efficiency ≥85% at concentrations below 100 ppm. Acidic gases such as SO₂ and NO₂ and alkaline gases such as NH₃: efficiency ≥95% when impregnated adsorbents are used.
Adsorption capacity | Saturation capacity per unit mass of adsorbent: activated carbon provides formaldehyde adsorption ≥80 mg/g and benzene adsorption ≥200 mg/g. Impregnated activated carbon for acidic or alkaline gases provides SO₂ adsorption ≥150 mg/g and NH₃ adsorption ≥100 mg/g. Molecular sieves or catalysts provide ozone (O₃) decomposition capacity ≥5,000 mg/g; catalytic decomposition does not have a conventional saturation limit.
Rated airflow | Small equipment such as household purifiers: 50–300 m³/h. Medium-size systems such as commercial air-conditioning units: 500–2,000 m³/h. Large industrial equipment: 5,000–20,000 m³/h through modular combinations.
Initial and final pressure drop | Initial pressure drop at rated airflow: 50–150 Pa, lower than that of high-efficiency physical filters to avoid excessive energy consumption. Final pressure drop is generally two to three times the initial value; replacement is required when this level is reached.
Service life | Depends on pollutant concentration and airflow. In low-concentration environments such as homes with formaldehyde ≤0.1 mg/m³: 6–12 months. In medium- to high-concentration environments such as laboratories and newly renovated homes: 2–6 months.
Core materials | Activated carbon in granular or honeycomb form for broad-spectrum VOC adsorption. Impregnated activated carbon loaded with chemicals, such as sodium sulfite for formaldehyde or sulfuric acid for NH₃. Molecular sieves for polar molecules such as formaldehyde and H₂O. Catalysts such as MnO₂ and TiO₂ that decompose ozone and formaldehyde into harmless substances.
Temperature and humidity resistance | Suitable temperature range: −10°C to 60°C; high temperatures may accelerate adsorbent aging. Suitable relative humidity: 30%–80%. High humidity may reduce activated carbon adsorption of nonpolar VOCs but can support catalytic reactions.
Additional functions | Some products incorporate antibacterial coatings to prevent damp adsorbent from developing mold, or flame-retardant properties for industrial applications.

Practical Applications

The principal value of a chemical filter is its ability to remove gaseous pollutants. It is therefore widely used wherever chemical contamination exists or air quality requirements are stringent.

Newly Renovated Homes and Offices

• Chemical filters remove formaldehyde, aromatic hydrocarbons, TVOCs, and other pollutants released by renovation materials. Combined with a physical filter that captures dust, they provide broad-spectrum purification and can shorten the ventilation and odor-dissipation period before occupancy.

• Suitable settings include newly renovated bedrooms, children’s rooms, and offices, especially homes with pregnant occupants, infants, or others who are sensitive to formaldehyde.

Industrial Production Environments

• Chemical, electronics, and pharmaceutical workshops: Filters remove corrosive gases such as acid mist and ammonia released during production. This protects precision components such as chips and circuit boards from corrosion while safeguarding worker health.

• Printing and painting workshops: Filters adsorb organic solvents such as benzene and toluene released by inks and paints. When used with explosion-proof equipment, they help reduce explosion risk and support compliance with environmental-emission requirements.

Laboratories and Healthcare Facilities

• Chemical laboratories: Filters remove toxic gases accidentally released during experiments, including chlorine and hydrogen sulfide, helping maintain air quality in a negative-pressure laboratory.

• Hospital operating rooms and intensive care units: Filters remove residual ethylene oxide used to sterilize medical devices and residual ozone left after air disinfection, preventing irritation to patients and healthcare personnel.

Public and Commercial Facilities

• Shopping malls, hotels, and metro stations: Filters treat odors in crowded areas, including cooking fumes and perspiration, as well as NOx from infiltrating vehicle exhaust, improving environmental comfort.

• Museums and archives: Filters control acidic gases such as SO₂ and NO₂ to prevent oxidation, fading, or mold damage to cultural artifacts and archival paper.

Special Industrial Exhaust Treatment

• Semiconductor manufacturing: Filters remove organic vapors from photolithography, such as photoresist volatiles, preventing contamination of the cleanroom environment.

• Nuclear industry: Dedicated chemical adsorbents such as zeolite filter radioactive gases such as radon and reduce radiation risk.

Vehicle and Compact Purification Equipment

• In-vehicle air purifiers remove formaldehyde released by new vehicle interiors, NO₂ from infiltrating exhaust, smoke odors, and similar pollutants, improving air quality in the enclosed passenger compartment.

Summary of Core Characteristics

• Advantages: Targeted removal of gaseous pollutants that physical filters cannot replace; flexible media selection that can be customized to the pollutant; and effective control of odors and chemical irritation.

• Limitations: Adsorbent media eventually become saturated and require regular replacement; otherwise, captured pollutants may desorb and be released. Adsorption efficiency also varies greatly among gases, so the media must be matched to the pollutant.

In summary, chemical filters are a primary line of defense against gaseous contaminants. Through targeted chemical action, they play an irreplaceable role in homes, industrial facilities, healthcare environments, and other settings, particularly in controlling invisible chemical pollution.
