How Much Better Is a Standalone Air Purifier Than an Air Conditioner’s Built-In Filter?

“ Built-in AC filters mainly catch coarse dust, while dedicated purifiers use HEPA, activated carbon, and high-volume circulation to remove fine particles and gases. ”
There is a fundamental difference in purification performance between an air conditioner’s built-in filter and a standalone air purifier. The main reason is that their design purposes, filter capabilities, and purification methods are entirely different. The following compares their purification targets, filter performance, and real-world results in detail.
Core Difference: Design Purpose Determines the Upper Limit of Purification

Primary purpose
- Built-in AC filter: Protects internal air-conditioning components such as the evaporator and prevents dust buildup from reducing cooling or heating efficiency. Air purification is only a secondary function.
- Standalone air purifier: Is designed specifically to remove airborne pollutants, including particulate matter and gaseous contaminants, with efficient air purification as its primary purpose.

Purification coverage
- Built-in AC filter: Treats only the air near the air-conditioning intake. Its circulation range is limited and depends on the fan operating during cooling or heating.
- Standalone air purifier: Actively draws in air from across the room and forces it through the unit with a fan, covering the entire space. Its clean air delivery rate (CADR) directly indicates purification speed.

Filter design
- Built-in AC filter: Prioritizes low cost and long service life. Its filtration precision is low, and it captures only large particles.
- Standalone air purifier: Prioritizes high filtration efficiency. Its layered filter design—such as a prefilter, HEPA filter, and activated-carbon filter—targets different types of pollutants.

Specific Differences in Purification Performance: The Filter Media Tell the Story

1. Filtering particulate matter (PM2.5, dust, allergens, and more)

Built-in AC filter:

Most are coarse filters rated G3–G4. They can capture only large particles at least 5 μm in diameter, such as dust and hair, and have almost no effect on PM2.5 (diameter no greater than 2.5 μm), dust mites (0.1–0.5 μm), or pollen (10–100 μm but readily broken into smaller fragments).

For example, an ordinary AC filter typically removes less than 20% of PM2.5 and may fail to capture it at all.

Standalone air purifier:

Its core component is a HEPA filter, commonly rated H11–H13. An H11 filter captures at least 98% of 0.3 μm particles, while an H13 filter captures at least 99.97%, efficiently removing PM2.5, dust mites, pollen fragments, and other fine particles.

Some models also use gradient-density filters, with an outer layer that traps large particles and an inner layer that captures smaller particles, further improving efficiency.

2. Removing gaseous pollutants (formaldehyde, TVOCs, odors, and more)

Built-in AC filter:

The vast majority of AC filters contain no activated carbon. A few premium air conditioners add a small amount, but most built-in filters have virtually no capacity to adsorb formaldehyde, total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) from sources such as cooking fumes and cleaning products, secondhand-smoke odors, or other gaseous pollutants.

Even when activated carbon is included, it is usually only a thin layer of powdered carbon. Its adsorption capacity is extremely low, and it may become fully saturated within one to two months. Once saturated, it can instead become a new source of pollution by releasing previously adsorbed contaminants.

Standalone air purifier:

For gaseous pollutants, it uses a purpose-designed activated-carbon filter, sometimes with modified activated carbon, molecular sieves, or other media. Its adsorption capacity is tens or even hundreds of times greater than that of an AC filter.

For example, a high-quality air purifier may contain more than 500 g of columnar activated carbon with a large specific surface area. It can achieve a formaldehyde adsorption efficiency above 80% and has a specified cumulative clean mass (CCM) value indicating filter life. By comparison, an AC filter typically contains less than 10 g of activated carbon—too little to deliver a meaningful effect.

3. Air-circulation efficiency

Built-in AC filter:

An AC relies on its fan to move air, but that fan is designed primarily for heat exchange. Air volume is limited and the circulation path is fixed, concentrating mainly around the outlet. It cannot circulate and clean air efficiently throughout the home. For example, a filter in a living-room air conditioner may have no effect at all on pollutants in a bedroom.

Standalone air purifier:

A dedicated high-static-pressure fan and optimized airflow path—such as 360-degree intake with top discharge—actively draw in surrounding air and rapidly release clean air. This repeated circulation reduces pollutant concentrations throughout the room. The key performance metric is CADR, the volume of clean air delivered per hour. For example, a unit rated at 300 m³/h can theoretically purify the air in a space of about 80 m² in one hour.

Suitable Applications: When Is an AC Filter Enough, and When Is an Air Purifier Essential?

Situations in which an AC filter alone may be sufficient:

Where air quality is excellent—for example, PM2.5 remains below 35 μg/m³ over the long term, there is no renovation-related pollution, and there are no pets or smokers—and only basic interception of dust and hair is needed to prevent buildup inside the air conditioner, the built-in filter can meet basic requirements.

Situations in which an air purifier is essential:

- Areas with serious air pollution, frequent PM2.5 exceedances, or many smoggy days.
- Newly renovated homes where formaldehyde and TVOCs must be removed.
- Homes with allergy sufferers who need protection from dust mites, pollen, and pet dander.
- Homes with smokers or heavy cooking fumes, where odors and secondhand smoke must be removed.
- Bedrooms and other enclosed spaces where doors and windows remain closed at night and pollutants can accumulate.

Summary

An AC filter is a passive dust-control tool that meets only the air conditioner’s own protection requirements and offers extremely limited air purification. An air purifier, by contrast, is an active purification device that uses specialized filters and efficient circulation to address multiple types of airborne pollution. The difference is comparable to that between an ordinary mask and an N95 respirator: the former blocks only some dust, while the latter provides genuine protection against fine airborne contaminants.
