An air filter's efficiency class is a core measure of its performance. As an important high-efficiency filtration grade, H12 is widely used in cleanrooms, medical equipment, ventilation systems, and other applications. The main characteristics and advantages of H12 air filter media are outlined below.Core Characteristics of H12 Air Filter Media
The characteristics of H12 air filter media are closely related to their filtration principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
1. Clearly Defined Filtration-Efficiency Standard
Under international standards such as EN 1822, H12 falls within the high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) category. Its core efficiency requirement is approximately 99.5%–99.9% for particles 0.3 μm in diameter, with the precise figure depending on the applicable version of the standard. This efficiency range enables it to capture the vast majority of airborne particles, including dust, pollen, bacteria, and some virus-carrying particles.
2. Predominantly Composite-Fiber Construction
H12 filter media are generally made from glass fiber, polypropylene (PP) composite fiber, polyester fiber, or similar materials and formed into multilayer structures using specialized processes.
Glass-fiber media: These media offer strong heat resistance and can withstand temperatures above 120°C. Their fibers are only a few micrometers in diameter, allowing them to form dense filtration passages that capture small particles.
Composite-fiber media: These media combine the strengths of different fibers, such as the moisture resistance of PP fiber and the flexibility of polyester fiber, to improve the filter's adaptability to different environments.
Advantages of H12 Air Filter Media
1. Efficient Purification for a Wide Range of Applications
H12 media can effectively filter PM2.5, smoke, bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, mold spores, and other contaminants. They can satisfy the air-purification requirements of Class 1,000–10,000 cleanrooms, corresponding to ISO Classes 7–8.
They are suitable for medical operating rooms, laboratories, electronics plants, food-processing workshops, and other locations with demanding air-cleanliness requirements. They can also serve as the primary filter in high-end household air purifiers.
2. Strong Stability and Relatively Long Service Life
High-quality H12 media offer good resistance to temperature and humidity. Some materials can operate reliably from -30°C to 80°C and tolerate relative humidity of up to 80% without a significant decline in performance.
Under normal operating conditions, including effective removal of large particles by a pre-filter, their service life is generally six to twelve months. This reduces the cost and inconvenience of frequent replacement.
3. Low Airflow Resistance and Good Energy Efficiency
Compared with higher-grade H13 and H14 filters, H12 media generally have lower airflow resistance. This reduces the energy consumed by the fan in a ventilation system or air purifier and makes H12 suitable for equipment that runs continuously.
A pleated design further improves the airflow path. It maintains high filtration efficiency while reducing resistance and operating noise.
4. High Safety and Compatibility
Filter media are generally produced to meet standards such as RoHS and food-contact safety requirements. They have no objectionable odor or harmful volatile emissions and do not create secondary indoor-air pollution.
H12 media can be combined with an upstream coarse filter and a downstream activated-carbon filter to create a multistage system that provides coarse filtration, medium- to high-efficiency particle filtration, and odor removal.
Usage Considerations
Use H12 media with a pre-filter to prevent large dust particles from directly clogging the H12 layer and shortening its service life or reducing its efficiency.
Check the filter regularly. Replace it when its resistance reaches twice the initial value or when purification performance declines noticeably.
Do not wash the filter unless it is specifically labeled washable. Washing most H12 media damages their fiber structure or electrostatic properties and can sharply reduce filtration efficiency.
In summary, H12 air filter media combine efficient filtration, strong stability, and broad applicability. This makes them an ideal choice for medium- and high-end air-purification applications, balancing cleanliness requirements with operating cost and energy consumption.
