As the first line of defense against large particles, a prefilter relies on its material selection and structural design for performance. It must balance three key factors: capture efficiency, airflow resistance, and service life.Material Selection: Matching Different Application Needs
Mainstream materials each have their own advantages and are suited to different applications. Nylon mesh is tough and water-resistant. It is commonly used in household air purifiers, can be washed repeatedly, and is suitable for capturing pet hair and clumps of dust. Polyester fiber (PET) offers good weather resistance and a lofty structure. After treatment, it can better capture lint and clusters of pollen, so it is widely used in air-conditioning systems. PP nonwoven fabric is lofty, porous, and inexpensive. Used as a disposable prefilter in fresh-air ventilation systems and automotive air conditioners, it can maintain low airflow resistance.
Structural Design: Optimizing Capture Performance
Structural design affects capture performance. A mesh structure creates little airflow resistance and allows a high air-throughput rate, making it suitable for the air inlet of a household air purifier. In needle-punched nonwoven fabric, randomly interlaced fibers form a three-dimensional capture network that delivers higher efficiency and is suitable for fresh-air ventilation systems. To handle hair and similar contaminants, some prefilters use a napped surface that catches pet hair and dander while making the filter easier to clean.
Principles for Matching Material and Structure
The guiding principle is to match the material to the application and the structure to the operating need. For household use, nylon mesh combined with a grid structure offers convenience and low noise. In industrial applications, PP nonwoven fabric can be combined with a pleated structure to increase the capture area. The prefilter's pore size must also be larger than that of the main filter so that the filtration stages work in the correct sequence: large particles are captured by the prefilter, while fine particles pass to the main filter for removal.
