“ Baghouses, also known as bag filters, are efficient dry gas-filtration systems. A dust cake forms on the filter-bag surface to remove solid particles from industrial exhaust streams. ”

A bag dust filter (baghouse/bag filter) is a highly efficient dry gas-filtration device. It purifies gas by means of the dust cake that forms on the surface of its filter bags. Its primary function is to remove solid particles from dust-laden gas, and it is widely used in industrial exhaust treatment, air purification, and fluid purification. The following provides a detailed introduction covering its operating principle, structural components, performance characteristics, applications, and maintenance requirements.

I. Operating Principle

Bag dust filters capture dust through mechanisms including sieving, inertial impaction, interception, diffusion, electrostatic attraction, and gravity:

Sieving: When dust particles are larger than the gaps between the fibers of the filter medium or the pores within the deposited dust cake, they are screened out. Sieving plays a relatively minor role during initial filtration, when dust capture relies mainly on the fibers. As the dust cake grows thicker, sieving gradually becomes the dominant mechanism.

Inertial impaction: As dust-laden gas passes through the filter medium, dust particles collide with the fibers because of their inertia and are retained.

Interception and diffusion: Larger particles are intercepted directly by the fibers, while very small particles are captured when Brownian motion brings them into contact with the fibers.

Electrostatic attraction: Dust particles or the filter medium may carry an electric charge. Attraction between opposite charges can improve dust-collection efficiency, although it may make filter cleaning more difficult.

II. Structural Components

A bag dust filter consists mainly of the following components:

Filter bags: The core filtration elements. They may be made of woven fabric, felt, or synthetic fibers such as polyester, glass fiber, or PTFE. Depending on operating conditions, media may be selected for heat resistance, corrosion resistance, antistatic properties, or water- and oil-repellent treatment.

Cages: These support the filter bags and prevent deformation. They are generally made of metal or plastic.

Housing: This includes the dirty-air chamber, where dust-laden gas enters, and the clean-air chamber, from which purified gas exits.

Filter-cleaning system: Pulse-jet cleaning, mechanical vibration, or reverse airflow removes dust from the filter-bag surfaces while retaining the initial dust cake needed to maintain filtration performance.

Ash-discharge system: This collects and discharges dust removed during cleaning, using components such as an ash hopper and discharge valve.

III. Applications

Bag dust filters play a key role in the following fields:

Industrial Exhaust Treatment

Thermal power generation: They treat flue gas from coal-fired boilers at temperatures of 120–180°C and dust concentrations of 30–50 g/m³, with a high proportion of PM2.5. High-temperature-resistant PPS or PTFE media are used to meet ultra-low-emission requirements of no more than 10 mg/m³.

Iron and steel production: They are used in sintering, blast-furnace, converter, and other processes involving high temperatures of 250–500°C, corrosive gases such as SO₂ and NOx, and intermittent temperature spikes. Solutions include gradient filter media, membrane-laminated media, and cooling systems.

Cement production: They treat the high dust concentrations generated by raw mills, cement mills, coal mills, and similar equipment, which may reach 1,000 g/m³. Coal-mill systems use antistatic filter media and are fitted with explosion-relief valves.

Nonferrous metallurgy: They treat flue gas containing heavy-metal particulates and acidic gases. For example, flue gas from a copper-smelting flash furnace may contain SO₂ concentrations as high as 10%. Acid-resistant filter media and anticorrosion treatments are used.

Air Purification

Pharmaceutical and biomedical applications: They remove medicinal-herb residue and drug precipitates generated during the pretreatment of traditional Chinese medicine decoctions, Western-medicine oral liquids, injections, and similar products. Pharmaceutical-grade polypropylene or nylon filter media are used to meet GMP requirements.

Electronics and semiconductors: They provide preliminary treatment for ultrapure water and high-purity gases by removing activated-carbon powder and resin particles. High-cleanliness polypropylene or PTFE media are used for filtration ratings of 0.1–5 μm.

Fluid Purification

Water treatment: Applications include pretreatment of municipal tap water to remove sediment, algae, and colloids at 5–20 μm; purification of industrial circulating water to remove corrosion products and microbial slime at 10–50 μm; and advanced wastewater treatment to remove suspended solids from biologically treated effluent at 5–10 μm.

Food and beverages: Applications include removing pulp residue from freshly squeezed juice at 1–5 μm, removing impurities during milk pretreatment at 2–10 μm, and removing distillers' grains from baijiu at 1–3 μm. Food-grade filter media are used.

IV. Maintenance Requirements

Regular cleaning: Adjust the cleaning frequency according to changes in differential pressure to prevent an excessively thick dust cake from increasing resistance.

Filter-bag replacement: Replace damaged filter bags or bags with persistently high resistance promptly, selecting a filter-medium material suited to the operating conditions.

Prevent bag blinding: Control gas humidity to avoid condensation. Under high-humidity conditions, use filter bags with water- and oil-repellent treatment.

High-temperature protection: When treating high-temperature gas, install a cooling system to prevent the filter bags from burning.

Explosion protection: When handling combustible dust, use an explosion-protected baghouse equipped with explosion-relief valves and an explosion-suppression system.
