“ A practical overview of screen filters, including classifications by medium, structure, and precision, along with their benefits, limitations, and common uses. ”
I. Definition of a Screen Filter
A screen filter is a filtration device that uses porous media, such as metal mesh, nylon mesh, or polypropylene mesh, to intercept impurities and suspended matter in a liquid or gas. Its core principle is to separate particles of different sizes according to the screen's opening size, thereby purifying the medium.

II. Common Types by Structure and Application

1. Classification by Medium

Liquid screen filter: Used to filter water, oil, coatings, and other liquids. Examples include household prefilters and industrial lubricating-oil filters.

Gas screen filter: Used to filter air and compressed gases. Examples include air-compressor intake filters and primary-efficiency air-conditioning filters.

2. Classification by Structure

Basket strainer: The screen is shaped like a basket and installed in a pipeline. It is commonly used for industrial liquid filtration in chemical-processing and water-supply or drainage systems. The GL41H basket strainer is one example.

Y-strainer: Its body is Y-shaped and contains an internal screen. The compact structure is easy to install and is often placed at the upstream end of a heating pipeline or pump inlet. The Y110T-Y strainer is one example.

Bag filter: Uses a filter bag made from screen-like media as its core component. Its large filtration area suits high-flow liquid filtration, including wastewater treatment and ink production. The DGF bag filter is one example.

Plate filter: Uses multiple stacked screens to provide stable filtration precision. It is suitable for applications requiring a large filtration area, including coatings and food or beverage processing. The BF plate filter is one example.

3. Classification by Filtration Precision

Coarse screen: Has relatively large openings, from 50 μm to 10 mm, and intercepts sand, rust, hair, and other large particles. A household prefilter is one example.

Medium-efficiency screen: Has openings of 10-50 μm and intercepts dust and suspended matter. Applications include industrial circulating-water filtration and medium-efficiency air-conditioning filters.

III. Advantages and Limitations

Advantages

1. Simple construction and low cost: The main components are a screen and housing, so manufacturing and maintenance costs are low. This suits applications with limited budgets.

2. Flexible filtration precision: Screen openings can be selected from 10 μm to 10 mm to meet different particle-removal requirements.

3. Convenient maintenance: The screen can be removed for cleaning or replacement without specialized tools. A household prefilter, for example, can simply be opened and washed.

4. Broad compatibility: Screen filters can handle liquids or gases and are compatible with water, oil, air, and other media. They are commonly used as pretreatment at the inlet of pipelines and equipment.

Limitations

1. Limited maximum precision: Screen filters have difficulty intercepting colloids, bacteria, and particles below 10 μm. High-precision technologies such as HEPA or membrane filtration may therefore be required downstream.

2. Clogging and frequent maintenance: Accumulated impurities increase pressure drop. In high-flow applications such as industrial-wastewater filtration, the screen may need daily cleaning.

3. Material must match the medium: Acidic or alkaline liquids require corrosion-resistant materials such as 316L stainless steel or nylon. Otherwise, the screen may rust or fail.

4. Poor performance with complex media: Highly viscous liquids and fiber-laden fluids such as slurry can wrap around and clog the screen, so pretreatment is required.

IV. Applications

1. Household and General-Purpose Applications

Water-supply prefilter: Installed on a home's incoming water pipe to intercept sand and rust and protect water heaters, washing machines, and other equipment. This is coarse filtration, commonly with openings of 50-100 μm.

Air-purifier prefilter: Intercepts dust and hair as the first filtration stage, while a downstream HEPA filter provides high-precision purification.

Automotive cabin filter: Filters airborne dust and pollen. It is a medium-efficiency screen that requires regular replacement.

2. Industrial Applications

Pipeline filtration: Chemical, petroleum, and pharmaceutical plants use Y-strainers or basket strainers in liquid and gas pipelines to intercept particles and protect pumps, valves, and other equipment. Hydraulic-oil filtration, for example, helps prevent mechanical wear.

High-flow liquid treatment: Bag or plate filters remove impurities after a primary settling tank in a wastewater-treatment plant or during coating and ink production, improving filtration efficiency.

Compressed-air systems: Filters remove metal fragments and oil contamination from an air compressor's output, protecting pneumatic tools such as cylinders and spray guns.

3. Environmental and Energy Applications

Rainwater and wastewater collection: Coarse basket strainers remove leaves and suspended matter from surface runoff or large particles from wastewater.

Fuel and lubricating-oil filtration: Fuel filters in generators and boilers prevent nozzle blockage, while engine-oil filters help extend machinery life.

A screen filter is an economical and practical device. Its simple construction and convenient maintenance make it a preferred choice for medium- and low-precision filtration, including pipeline pretreatment and household water prefiltration. Selection should account for the medium, whether liquid or gas, the target particle size, and the medium's corrosiveness. Complex or high-precision applications should use screen filtration as part of a multistage system.
