Material performance is critical to the filtration efficiency, service life, and stability of a separatorless HEPA filter. High-quality materials enable superior air-purification performance. The following sections explain the material composition and performance benefits in detail.Core Materials in a Separatorless HEPA Filter
A separatorless HEPA filter mainly consists of filter media, separator material, a frame, and sealing material. The preferred high-quality materials are described below.
Filter Media
Materials: Ultrafine fiberglass filter paper or polypropylene (PP) electrostatic electret filter paper.
Ultrafine fiberglass filter paper: Fiber diameters are generally 0.1-2.0 μm. The fibers form a complex three-dimensional network with high porosity of at least 80%. Smooth fiber surfaces also help keep resistance low.
PP electrostatic electret filter paper: Electret treatment gives the fibers a permanent electrostatic charge. Electrostatic attraction improves the capture of very small particles while preserving low resistance.
Characteristics: High-quality filter media has uniform fiber distribution, consistent thickness, and no tears or holes, ensuring stable filtration efficiency.
Separator Material
Materials: Hot-melt adhesive or polyester-fiber (PET) separators.
Hot-melt adhesive: A stable melting point, generally 60-120°C, and good flow allow an even coating to be applied to the filter paper, forming separator layers of consistent thickness. After curing, it has high strength and does not break easily.
PET separators: Good flexibility and strength, combined with a thickness of only 0.1-0.3 mm, reduce overall filter volume and increase dust-holding capacity.
Characteristics: A high-quality separator must adhere closely to the filter medium without bubbles or gaps that could allow airflow bypass.
Frame Material
Materials: Aluminum alloy, galvanized steel sheet, or ABS plastic are commonly used.
Aluminum alloy: High strength, low weight, and corrosion resistance make it suitable for humid or high-cleanliness environments such as healthcare facilities and semiconductor workshops.
Galvanized steel sheet: Lower in cost, with a zinc coating that resists rust; suitable for general industrial environments.
ABS plastic: Impact-resistant, chemically resistant, and easy to mold, making it suitable for lightweight designs.
Characteristics: The frame must be structurally rigid, with smooth, burr-free corners and a reliable seal against the filter medium to prevent air leakage.
Sealing Material
Materials: Silicone rubber or polyurethane (PU) sealant.
Silicone rubber: Resistant to high and low temperatures from -60°C to 200°C, resistant to aging, and highly elastic, allowing it to accommodate expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes.
PU sealant: Cures to a moderate hardness, bonds strongly, and seals metals, plastics, and other materials effectively.
Characteristics: A high-quality sealant must be free of bubbles and cracks. Once cured, it must bond tightly to both frame and filter medium to ensure airtightness.
Performance Benefits of High-Quality Materials
Higher Filtration Efficiency
Ultrafine fiberglass or PP electrostatic electret paper can provide 99.97% efficiency for 0.3 μm particles at HEPA grade, or even 99.999% at ULPA grade. It effectively captures bacteria, viruses, smoke, PM2.5, and other fine particles.
Example: In a semiconductor-chip manufacturing workshop, a high-quality separatorless filter can keep airborne-particle concentrations below 100 particles per cubic foot, meeting Class 100 cleanroom requirements.
Lower Resistance and Better Energy Efficiency
High-quality media combines uniform fiber distribution with high porosity, so airflow resistance is low. Initial resistance is generally no more than 250 Pa, reducing fan energy use and operating cost.
Comparison: Inferior filter paper often has uneven fiber diameters and low porosity, resulting in initial resistance above 300 Pa and a 10%-20% increase in long-term energy consumption.
Greater Dust-Holding Capacity and Longer Life
Uniform spacing between hot-melt or PET separators maximizes the effective media area. Dust-holding capacity can reach 400-600 g/m², compared with about 200-300 g/m² for an ordinary filter, extending the replacement interval.
For example, a high-quality filter may serve for one to two years in a hospital operating room, while an inferior product may require replacement after only six months.
Greater Structural Stability
Aluminum-alloy or high-strength ABS frames resist deformation and retain structural integrity even at a high air velocity of 0.45 m/s ±20%. Silicone-rubber sealant resists aging and is unlikely to crack or leak during prolonged use.
Test result: After 500 temperature cycles from -20°C to 80°C, the sealing performance of a high-quality filter deteriorates by less than 5%, while an inferior product may deteriorate by more than 20%.
Broader Adaptability
Heat-resistant materials such as silicone rubber and fiberglass filter paper can be used in paint-curing booths at temperatures up to 120°C. Moisture-resistant materials, such as ABS frames and waterproof PP filter paper, are suitable for environments with humidity above 80%, including food-processing workshops.
Applications for High-Quality Materials
Healthcare: Operating rooms and intensive-care units must capture bacteria 0.5-5 μm in diameter and viruses 0.02-0.3 μm in diameter. High-quality filters help reduce infection risk.
Semiconductor and electronics manufacturing: Chip production requires strict control of nanoscale airborne contaminants, including metal ions and dust. ULPA-grade separatorless filters can meet Class 1 cleanroom requirements.
Food and pharmaceutical production: High-quality filters help prevent microbial and dust contamination. They must meet GMP requirements, while their frames and sealants must tolerate disinfection methods such as formaldehyde fumigation and hydrogen-peroxide spray.
Aerospace and laboratories: Satellite-assembly areas and BSL-3 or BSL-4 biosafety laboratories must capture highly hazardous particles. Filter materials must resist corrosion and release no volatile substances.
