Bag filters are common medium- or sub-high-efficiency filtration devices in air-handling systems. Their different configurations can be classified by filtration efficiency, media, structural design, and functional features. The following categories and selection strategies can help you accurately match a filter to actual requirements.
Classification by Filtration Efficiency

Bag-filter efficiency generally follows the European EN 779:2012 standard and is divided into grades F5 through F9, each corresponding to a different particle-removal efficiency. Some applications also refer to the American ASHRAE standard. The characteristics and suitable applications of each grade are shown below.

Efficiency Grade | Corresponding ASHRAE Grade | Typical Efficiency for 0.4 μm Particles | Suitable Applications
F5 | MERV 8-10 | 40%-60% | Ordinary offices, shopping malls, homes, and other locations with modest air-quality requirements; used as a secondary stage after coarse filtration.
F6 | MERV 11 | 60%-70% | General hospital wards, schools, hotels, and air-conditioning systems in areas with poor outdoor air quality; captures pollen and dust.
F7 | MERV 12 | 70%-85% | Class 10,000 cleanrooms in electronics plants, food-processing facilities, and precision-instrument workshops where medium-size particles must be controlled.
F8 | MERV 13-14 | 85%-95% | Class 1,000 hospital operating rooms, pharmaceutical clean areas, and prefiltration for semiconductor workshops; efficiency approaches the sub-HEPA range.
F9 | MERV 15 | 95%-99% | Class 100 laboratories and aerospace-equipment workshops; used as a buffer stage before HEPA filters to extend final-filter life.

Classification by Media and Structural Design

1. By Filter-Media Material

Polyester Fiber (PET)

Characteristics: Low cost and good moisture resistance; it can be washed once or twice. However, its heat resistance is moderate, at no more than 80°C, and its dust-holding capacity is medium.

Applications: Residential fresh-air systems, commercial-building air conditioning, and ordinary industrial environments.

Fiberglass

Characteristics: Finer fibers provide high efficiency, up to F9, and high dust-holding capacity. The material is relatively brittle, so it must not be pulled during installation. It also offers good heat resistance, up to 250°C.

Applications: Cleanrooms, high-temperature environments such as oven exhaust, and high-precision filtration.

Synthetic Fiber, Such as Polypropylene (PP)

Characteristics: Good antistatic performance, resistance to chemical corrosion, and suitability for flammable or explosive environments such as oil-mist and dusty workshops.

Applications: Chemical workshops, coating lines, and flour mills.

2. By Filter-Bag Structure

Number of bags: Common designs use 3, 5, 6, or 8 bags. More bags provide a larger filtration area and greater dust-holding capacity.

Example: A three-bag filter with a filtration area of about 3 m² is suitable for low-airflow systems, such as residential fresh-air systems with airflow of no more than 300 m³/h. An eight-bag filter with an area of about 8 m² is suitable for high-airflow central air-conditioning systems with airflow of at least 5,000 m³/h.

Bag length: Standard lengths include 292 mm, 492 mm, and 692 mm. Longer bags increase the filtration area and extend the replacement interval.

Example application: For hospital air-conditioning systems operating continuously 24 hours a day, 692 mm bags are preferred to reduce replacement frequency.

3. Classification by Functional Features

Moisture-Resistant Type (Waterproof Treatment)

Material: The filter-media surface is coated with a waterproof PET layer, or polypropylene media is used.

Applications: Damp environments such as basements and swimming pools, where the treatment prevents moisture-related mold growth that would reduce filtration efficiency.

Antistatic Type

Design: Conductive fibers or an antistatic coating are incorporated into the media to prevent electrostatic sparks caused by dust accumulation.

Applications: Electronics factories, where static electricity could damage components, and flammable or explosive locations such as paint workshops.

Antibacterial Type

Treatment: Antibacterial agents such as silver ions are added to the media to inhibit microbial growth.

Applications: Infectious-disease wards, biological laboratories, and food workshops, where the filter helps prevent secondary bacterial contamination.

4. Selection Strategy

Determine the Required Filtration Efficiency

For low-cleanliness applications such as homes and shopping malls, select F5-F6 to balance cost and basic filtration.

For medium- and high-cleanliness applications such as hospitals and electronics plants, use at least F7. Cleanrooms should use F8-F9 as prefilters for the downstream HEPA filters.

Example: During the COVID-19 pandemic, upgrading the air-conditioning systems in hospital fever clinics to F8 was recommended to improve capture of virus carriers such as droplet nuclei.

Assess Environmental Conditions

For dusty industrial environments, choose fiberglass media with a long, multi-bag design, such as eight 692 mm bags, to increase dust-holding capacity.

For humid environments, prioritize moisture-resistant PET media to prevent mold growth and clogging.

Where static electricity is a risk, an antistatic type is essential and must be grounded during installation to prevent charge accumulation.

Match the Equipment Parameters

Airflow calculation: The filter's rated airflow should be at least 1.2 times the actual airflow of the air-conditioning system. For example, if system airflow is 3,000 m³/h, select a filter rated for at least 3,600 m³/h.

Installation space:

For limited space above a ceiling, select a slim frame, such as one no more than 200 mm thick, with a three- to five-bag design.

Floor-standing air-handling units can accommodate large multi-bag filters, such as eight-bag models, to reduce replacement frequency.

Balance Cost and Maintenance

Initial cost: Fiberglass costs more than synthetic fiber, which costs more than polyester; F9 costs more than F5.

Maintenance cost:

A long, multi-bag design has a higher initial cost but a long replacement interval, such as once per year, making it suitable for continuously operating systems.

Washable polyester has a low initial cost, but efficiency falls by 10%-15% after washing. It is suitable for noncritical applications with limited budgets.

5. Typical Selection Examples

Application | Recommended Efficiency | Media | Structural Design | Special Feature
Residential fresh-air system | F6-F7 | Polyester fiber | 3-5 bags x 292 mm | Optional antibacterial treatment
Class 1,000 electronics cleanroom | F8-F9 | Fiberglass | 6-8 bags x 492 mm | Antistatic
Hospital operating-room air conditioning | F9 | Antibacterial fiberglass | 8 bags x 692 mm | Antibacterial and moisture-resistant
Coating-workshop exhaust system | F7 | Antistatic synthetic fiber | 5-6 bags x 492 mm | Antistatic and oil-resistant

6. Precautions

Do not substitute a low-efficiency filter for a higher-efficiency one. For example, using F6 instead of F8 in a cleanroom will overload the final HEPA filter and may shorten its service life by more than 50%.

Pay attention to frame sealing. Bag filters must be fitted with sealing strips or flanges; otherwise, an air-leakage rate above 5% can defeat the rated filtration performance.

Verify performance in special applications. In flammable or explosive environments, select a filter that has passed antistatic testing, such as a surface resistance of no more than 10⁹ Ω, and test the resistance regularly.

7. Summary

Select a bag filter according to four principles: match efficiency to the application, match the media to the environment, match the structure to the equipment, and balance cost against maintenance. First define the core requirements, such as cleanliness, airflow, and environmental conditions, and then compare specific parameters such as media, bag count, and special functions. For complex medical or industrial applications, consult standards such as ISO 14644-1 or ask the manufacturer for a customized solution to ensure an efficient and economical filtration system.
